Walk behind mowers

Walk behind mowers require someone to push them along, literally walking behind giving them a push. Some are electric – corded or battery charged – and others run on gas. And then manual mowers, like push reel mowers, rely on people power alone.

Riding mowers

Riding mowers, sometimes called ride-on or sit on mowers, are operated by someone sitting on them. Most look like small tractors with the cutting blades (deck if you want to be precise) underneath. As with walk behind mowers there are a number of variations to consider such as gas, electric, and battery power, rear engine, mulching, zero turn…lots to consider. Most practical for the larger properties, they save time and effort.

Robotic Mowers

Robotic mowers, like robotic vacuum cleaners, work autonomously based on a mapping system. The cutting area is usually defined by a boundary wire buried just below the grass. Like the robot vacuum cleaner, generally, the battery powered mower pops out from its docking station on a set schedule, and uses a random pattern to cut the grass within the cutting area, avoiding obstacles and mulching as it goes (because it cuts it a little, more frequently).
